Big Bend

Saturday, April 20th 2024

After much hemming and hawing, Kate and I decide to make the trek out to Big Bend instead of playing it safe with a stay-cation. Last night we were wiped out from 247KIDS but this morning we giggle excitedly as we throw camping gear into the car.

After a big meal at Brick BBQ in Marathon we drive into the park at golden hour. We hike a steep 1.3 miles to our campsite at Juniper Flats, arriving just as the sun bathes the mountain in gold. I actually hike it a second time in the pitch dark to collect our queen air mattress. We are silly and comfy.

The pics tell the rest except a tiny interaction with an older hiker who caught us schlepping an absurd amount of gear back to the car during our exit. As we passed, he studied our traveling circus and sang the words “going camping..” with a hint of incredulity as we passed out of earshot.

It's not easy to put Big Bend into words: endless landscape is what comes to mind. I'll let the photos tell the story for now, and will be back soon, thirsty for more.
